AIR GUITAR NATION
New York, NY, September 13, 2006
“To err is human… to air guitar, divine.” After winning awards and bringing audiences to their feet at Tribeca and other film festivals across the country, AIR GUITAR NATION was acquired this week by Docurama Films in an all-rights deal. The announcement was made today by Steve Savage and Susan Margolin, Co-Principals of Docurama Films parent company New Video and AIR GUITAR NATION producers Dan Cutforth and Jane Lipsitz of Magical Elves and Anna Barber. The deal was brokered by Cinetic Media.
The leading distributor of documentary films to the home entertainment marketplace, Docurama is expanding its reach to the theatrical market with AIR GUITAR NATION which will be released in association with Shadow Distribution, Docurama’s partner in a first look deal taking Shadow’s theatrical films to DVD; recent collaborations include The Wild Parrots of Telegraph Hill and the upcoming The Beauty Academy of Kabul. AIR GUITAR NATION is slated for a national Spring 2007 theatrical release.
Discussing theatrical distribution, New Video’s Steve Savage said, “After releasing over 150 documentaries on DVD, it was inevitable that the time would come for Docurama to extend its reach to the theatrical space. We’ve waited and looked for the right fit for our theatrical debut, knowing that we wanted to come out of the gate with not only a quality film, but also one that would be broadly entertaining. AIR GUITAR NATION delivers.”
As part of the deal VH1 will be taking the first television window for AIR GUITAR NATION beginning in 2008. VH1 will also provide marketing support for the theatrical and DVD releases. Savage continued, “Having the support of VH1 for the theatrical release, as well as coordinating with the 2007 US Air Guitar Championships to promote the film, will make it possible for us to reach the wide audience this film deserves.”
“Air Guitar Nation has been a labor of love for many people, over several years, and we are very proud of the film” said Cutforth. Regarding this deal, Barber added, “New Video and Shadow clearly share our passion for this project and our commitment to bringing the extraordinary world of competitive air guitar the film explores, to the widest audience possible.”
A battle of naked ambition played out on the national and, ultimately, world stage, AIR GUITAR NATION chronicles the birth of the US Air Guitar Championships as legions of aspiring rock stars live out their dreams on a quest to become the world champion in a strange world where musical ability plays second fiddle to virtual virtuosity. As the film un-reels, two aspiring rock legends strum and strut their way towards glory and the coveted national title. C. Diddy (David Jung), a samurai warrior clad in a “Hello Kitty” breast plate and red kimono, emerges as an early favorite. But his arch nemesis from the Lower East Side, Björn Türoque (Dan Crane), is not far behind. While C. Diddy threatens to unleash his self-professed “Asian Fury” on his competitors, Björn vows to take Diddy down. As the film reaches its climax, the future of Air hangs in the balance; will Björn’s technical prowess, stage presence, and airness[1] be enough to take him to the top, or will C. Diddy conquer all to become America’s first supreme being of Air -Guitar?
Full of triumph and disappointment, patriotic spirit and political tension – and, of course, invisible guitars – AIR GUITAR NATION and filmmaker Alexandra Lipsitz take audiences on an inspiring, exhilarating, and ultimately hilarious journey that delves deep to find out what it truly takes to become the best in the world and find the inner meaning of the chant, “Make Air, Not War.”
Cutforth and Lipsitz’ production company Magical Elves has created some of the most compelling television of the past five years including Bravo’s "Project Runway" and NBC’s "Treasure Hunters." They have also Executive Produced "Last Comic Standing", "Project Greenlight", "Bands On The Run" and "Top Chef." They have multiple Emmy nominations. Barber is an independent producer and one of the founders of the US Air Guitar Championships.
